Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Drake, Funke Akindele, 13 Others Announced Winners In Inaugural NET HONOURS People’s Choice Awards

Four years ago, Nigerian Entertainment Today instituted NET Honours, a special recognition award given to deserving individuals in the entertainment industry. Since then, several outliers and industry veterans have been recipients.

This year, we’re launching the People’s Choice Awards along with our annual official charts of trends, searches and visits on TheNet.ng- in conjunction with our sister sites ORIN and TNS.ng.

As the name implies, the NET Honours does not have a panel of judges determining who gets decorated. Instead, we make it the choice of the fans- in this case, the audiences on our website, and social media platforms – nearly 40 million users. This past year alone, our website was visited 10 million times, up 23% from 8 million it was in 2015. On Facebook and YouTube, we scored over 25 million video views.

On that note, we’ll like for you to meet our winners!

Tiwa Savage

The singer had a tumultuous year but that did not distract her from her music. In the midst of all her marriage drama, she signed a management and distribution deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation.

Basketmouth

The popular comedian had a very interesting year. Robbed at gunpoint at his house in September, he lost his mother a month later.

Funke Akindele

Her popular TV series, Jenifa’s Diary got even more popular during 2016. Then she went and got married to JJC Skills in London in a wedding so secret it shocked the entire industry.

Wizkid

2016 was definitely Wizkid’s year. Sold out tour with Chris Brown, a chart-topping collaboration with Drake, a Grammy nomination and all the Artiste of the Year awards he could get.

Toolz

Her wedding ceremony with Tunde Demuren at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai was the most talked about wedding of the entire year .

Drake

The Canadian rapper had probably the biggest song of the year with ‘One Dance’. His Summer Sixteen tour with Future broke the record for the highest-grossing hip-hop tour ever.

Odunlade Adekola

No Yoruba movie released in 2016 was probably complete without the popular actor. As ubiquitous as he was, so was the variety of his performances.

Toke Makinwa

The ruckus that surrounded the breakup of her marriage might have occurred a few years ago but the release of her best selling memoir, Unbecoming brought back the limelight.

Mikel Obi

The Super Eagles captain led the Dream Team to a bronze place finish at the Rio Olympics and ended his decade-long stay with Chelsea by signing a mega deal with a Chinese club.

The Headies

Once again, the Headies proved to be most prestigious and most respected music award show. It’s 11th edition held at the Eko Convention Centre on December 22, 2016.

Diamond Platnumz

He is one of the biggest-selling Tanzanian artistes of all time and one of the biggest on the continent.

Linda Ikeji

Hate her or love her, Linda Ikeji cannot be ignored. In 2016, she expanded her media empire, moving to a multi-million naira office and setting up a social media website.

NET Honours (PCA) is one of the many ways Thenetng is working to celebrate our entertainers, while also giving power to those who matter to them most: the fans. It’s also our wish that the data will be useful for those interested in verifiable figures and stats, as we continue to move the Nigerian entertainment sector forward.

After all if we don’t, who will?
